Winter Wonders: Off-Season Hiking in Yushan National Park

I’ve always been a fan of off-season travel. While the weather might not always be perfect and some attractions might be closed, the perks of traveling during shoulder season—such as lower rates and fewer crowds—are unbeatable.

When it comes to hiking, however, off-season travel can be a bit more challenging. Weather conditions play a crucial role in outdoor activities, and it’s essential to have favorable weather on your side. While researching the best time to hike Yushan / Jade Mountain in Taiwan, I found that most sources advise against hiking in winter, and the reasons are pretty clear… but we went anyway.

Living in the Philippines, where the weather is either too hot or too wet, I had always been wary of hiking in winter. But after surviving the Everest Base Camp Trek in early winter of 2022, I thought, why not do another winter hike?

Booking Challenges and Solutions

Many articles mention that booking major hiking trails in Taiwan can be tricky due to their lottery system. We tried booking another hike back in 2022 but were not lucky enough to get drawn. This time, I wanted to increase my chances of getting a hiking pass, so we went with an agency with a solid track record offering a hiking trip in February 2024. We signed quite early in the middle of 2023.

Mt. Yushan in Winter Without the Snow

Winter hiking in Yushan National Park can pose many challenges due to the altitude and the likelihood of snowfall. While I was excited at the idea of hiking in snow, I was lucky that it didn’t. Instead, we enjoyed clear skies, cool temperatures, and breathtaking mountain views, despite some windy sections. The absence of snow allowed us uninterrupted access to the trails, especially at the summit.

Preparing for the Cold: Essential Information for Winter Hikers

Our agency took care of our passes and logistics, but it’s certainly possible to hike Jade Mountain independently, even in winter. Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike:

  • Permits and Regulations: Ensure you have the necessary permits for hiking in Yushan. Check the park’s official website for up-to-date information on regulations.
  • Duration of Hikes: We did the trek over two days, staying one night in Paiyun Lodge. However, we met a few hikers who were doing it as a day hike. Day hiking at Yushan National Park means you don’t have to worry about getting hut passes — Paiyun lodge can only accommodate about 110 people.
  • Facilities: Even in winter, Yushan’s Takaka Visitor Center and Paiyun Lodge are still manned, and services are available. The trails are also well-maintained.

Conclusion

Yushan National Park in winter offers a unique and captivating hiking experience for outdoor lovers. With its clear skies, peaceful trails, and stunning natural beauty, it’s the perfect destination for those looking to explore Taiwan’s great outdoors. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual adventurer, Yushan’s off-season trails provide a rewarding and memorable journey.
